Some might believe Jesus suffered from hunger, as if he were a poor, powerless man that could not provide himself with food, and could not feed his followers. The only times I know of when he suffered from lack of food was when he was fasting, by his choice. (Luke 4:2
- see verses below or look up in your own Bible)
Jesus could produce food and drink through his divine power, so if he or his followers were hungry, he could make his own meals! The angels of heaven also served him. (Luke 22:43)
He fed thousands of his followers free food, outside and away from stores. He does not need money to buy food for his followers. This act of feeding people without money is recorded in the Bible, without any sensationalism, yet it is what we would call a miracle. (Luke 9:13-17)
Those who follow Jesus never starve to death. His disciples receive his care and provision. (Luke 22:35)
Jesus can even convert water into wine, again, without money. (John 4:46)
Those who come to Jesus shall never hunger and those who believe in him shall never thirst. (John 6:35)
He could convert stones into bread, and his enemy knows this. (Matthew 4:3)
The promise in Matthew 6:33 means to me: Do not sin. Love everyone. Learn God's word and live according to it. Focus on spiritual work, not physical work. If you do this, God will provide for all your physical needs.
But if we sin, or fail to love our neighbors, there are consequences for our rebellion, and we could suffer. When we fail to live as Jesus, we should immediately turn back to the Lord and ask for his help to do better. He will give us strength if and when we ask for it. It is his spirit in us that does all good works, and not our own. Ask for his strength and help, and he will give it to you. (Matthew 7:7)
Why focus on earthly work when our time here is so short? Jesus said his kingdom is not of this world. This life is temporary. Why work so hard to accumulate physical things, only to lose it all when it is time to leave? We have an offer from the Lord to lay it down and seek him instead, and he will give us rest. (Matthew 11:28)
He promises to take care of our basic physical needs if we make serving him our first priority, until our time here is over. And I confirm to you, he has fulfilled this promise in my life.
