Alabama Defies School Bible Ban ~ Supreme Court Ruling Challenged ~ MONTGOMERY, Aug. 6 (UPI) - The Alabama Board of Education, in open defiance of the U. S. Supreme Court, has made Bible reading part of the curriculum in public schools. and Gov. George Wallace promised to do the reading himself if necessary. Mr. Wallace said it was not an effort to get around the high court's June 17 ruling. It was defiance of the decision. "I would like for the people of Alabama to be in defiance of the ruling," he said. Mr. Wallace, who introduced the resolution adopted by the board yesterday, said, "If this is ever challenged while I am governor and the courts rule that we cannot read the Bible in some school, I'm going to that school and read it myself." Alabama law already requires daily Bible-reading in all state-supported schools. The resolution adopted goes a step further in making it a part of the course of study along with English and arithmetic in each school. Private schools would not be affected.

Bible Reading Out in Public School: Court WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court declared unconstitutional today use of Bible readings and recitation of the Lord's Prayer in public schools. The court ruled on two appeals directly involving attacks on such daily school opening exercises in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Similar practices are followed in many schools across the country. Justice Clark delivered the majority decision. Justice Stewart wrote a dissenting opinion. The legal question in both Maryland and Pennsylvania cases was whether such school practices violate the Constitution's 1st Amendment. The amendment prohibits government aid in establishment of religion and bars any interference with free exercise of religion. The decision was 8-1. Intense national interest had developed in the Maryland and Pennsylvania appeals particularly since the Supreme Court's decision on June 25, 1962 in a New York State case. The court then ruled unconstitutional the use of a nondenominational prayer composed by state school officials.
